What Is DHPP?

The Dog 4-in-1 Vaccine, Explained

DHPP — sometimes labelled DAPP, DA2PP or DHPPI — is a single combination vaccine covering four diseases.

D

Canine Distemper

H

Infectious Hepatitis

P

Canine Parvovirus

P

Canine Parainfluenza

Diseases Covered

What Each Disease Can Do to Your Dog

D

Canine Distemper

Highly contagious, affecting the respiratory, digestive and nervous systems. Can be fatal, especially in puppies.

H

Infectious Canine Hepatitis

Caused by canine adenovirus type 1; can affect the liver, kidneys, blood vessels and eyes.

P

Canine Parvovirus

Serious and highly contagious — especially dangerous for young or incompletely vaccinated puppies.

P

Canine Parainfluenza

A contagious respiratory virus linked to canine infectious respiratory disease complex (kennel cough).

Puppy Vaccination

Why DHPP Matters So Much for Puppies?

Puppies are especially vulnerable — maternal antibodies fade gradually and can interfere with early vaccination, which is why a series (not a single shot) is needed.

General guidance only — exact timing depends on the vaccine product, local disease risk and your puppy’s health.

DHPP vs. Rabies & Kennel Cough

💉 DHPP vs. Rabies Vaccine

DHPP does not protect against rabies. Your dog may need a separate rabies vaccine based on local regulations, travel requirements and veterinary advice. We can review both together.

🤧 DHPP vs. Kennel Cough Vaccine

DHPP’s parainfluenza component doesn’t fully cover kennel cough. Dogs at boarding, daycare, grooming or dog parks may benefit from an additional kennel cough vaccine, including Bordetella protection.
